Light Years
Light Speed=300,000 kilometers/second
Light Year: Distance light travels in one year=5.9 trillion years
10 m= .01 km
S=D/T
Sarah-0.002 km/sec = 63,072 km/year
Maanas-0.005 km/sec = 157,680 km/year
LIGHT YEARS ARE HUGE DISTANCES THAT WE USE TO MEASURE HOW FAR THINGS ARE AWAY FROM OUR SOLAR SYSTEM.
Sun to Earth= 8.5 light years

Galaxies
groups of stars, gases & dust held together by gravity
clusters: galaxies that travel together
3 main types- spiral, elliptical, irregular
Spiral- characterized by a bulge at the center and spiral arms, spiral shape is caused by the rotation of the galaxy
Irregular- galaxies that do not fit into any other class, as their name indicates they have irregular shapes
Elliptical- characterized by very bright centers and very little dust and gas, appear elongated or spherical and are basically massive blobs of stars, composed of mostly old stars
