12/13/12- We saw the different spectrums of light and electromagnetic energy, such as UV, and light rays. The purpose of the lab was to see the different spectrums of the light and how the color of the lightbulb affected the spectrum of the light. We also explored the different properties of electromagnetic energy. The results varied on the type of color. The clear light has all the colors of the spectrum, so all the color were shown in the spectrum. I am still uncertain about how these colors show up depending on the light. I learned that a red light has a spectrum of red, and a blue light has a spectrum of blue, orange, yellow, and green.
12/17/12- Red light has a longer frequency and wavelength. Blue light has a shorter frequency and wavelength. Astronomers use electromagnetic energy to figure out distances in space. They also use visible light to find out what elements are in the celestial body. (distance from bodies)
12/18/12- We dipped our finger in a tub of water. This showed a representation of waves and wavelengths. The purpose of the lab was to prove the red shift theory. We also got a representation of frequencies. When we poked our finger faster in the water, the wavelengths became shorter, proving that the energy increased and the frequency increased. I am still uncertain about this correlates with the Big Bang Theory. I am also unsure about some of the colors for the frequencies. We learned that the farther away you go from an object, the wavelengths will be longer, along with the frequency being lower. If the galaxies are coming together, then it will show a blue light through the spectroscope. The wavelengths will be shorter while the frequency is higher.
12/19/12- The red shift is the idea that the galaxy is expanding. Through a spectroscope, you would see a red spectrum with longer wave lengths. The red shift theory helps support the Big Bang Theory. Astronomers use radio waves to determine the proximity of celestial bodies with the distance from Earth.
1/7/13- I slept and celebrated the New Year.
What do astronomers use electromagnetic energy for? - astronomers use electromagnetic energy to observe how far celestial bodies are from each other. they also use electromagnetic energy to figure out the elements in the celestial bodies, and whether or not they are coming closer or farther away.
What is the Big Bang Theory and what evidence do astronomers use to support the theory- The Big Bang Theory is the idea that everything began in one atom, exploded, and that the universe is constantly expanding. Astronomers look out for the Red Shift mark to prove that the universe is expanding.
1/8/13- Light year: a unit of length in astronomy equal to the distance that light travels in one year in a vacuum or about 5.88 trillion miles (9.46 trillion kilometers). They use light years because space is very big.
1/9/13- three main types- spiral, elliptical, irregular so SHAPE
1/11/13- Nebulae are cosmic clouds of gas and dust floating in space. Most abundant object in the universe, begin as nebulae
